Shiloh Institute

Rural poverty and its root causes are not currently being adequately addressed in rural eastern North Carolina by public or private human service agencies. New and expanded approaches are needed to lift the rural poor (both non-dependent and dependent low income persons) to economic prosperity, or at least to a wholesome and healthy lifestyle. Because public human service agencies and programs alone cannot meet societal demands and all human needs, new and innovative approaches are necessary from the broader community, from religious and civic organizations, that are not bound by governmental bureaucratic structures. United Shiloh Missionary Baptist Association is therefore willing to make an impact on societal problems in the rural community by providing here-to-fore previously nonexistent facilities and services through collaboration with existing agencies, unique funding strategies, and developing programs aimed at improving the lot of the poor, including reducing violence among teens in schools and the broader community.

United Shiloh's executive committee has endorsed the expanded role of the association in getting more involved in the community and attempting to improve the quality oflife in the rural community, individual churches are also encouraged to become more active in helping to address the many problems that plague their individual communities. Just as Christ had a major concern for the social order of his day and sought to change things, we too have a responsibility to address the many social problems existing among our people.

Drug abuse, alcoholism, teenage parenting, child abuse and neglect, abuse of the elderly, low self-esteem, and crime are some of the major problems faced by rural eastern North Carolina, and in alarming numbers among the poor; while race and class discrimination, economic development, and transportation problems continue to be problems associated with the broader community. No individual, group, agency, or organization is able to adequately solve all of the problems facing society, but strong efforts to work collectively can bring about some positive changes. The establishment of a rural multipurpose community center, Shiloh Institute, used by the community at large, providing services to the community, would playa major role in helping United Shiloh to carry out a mission of service. The time is at hand that United Shiloh issue to all forty two churches of our association this urgent call for action.

What the Shiloh Institute Will Do

United Shiloh Missionary Baptist Association, dating back to the late 1800's, has a current membership of forty two (42) black churches located in Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties in eastern North Carolina. The association has fIfty six (56) acres of prime property located near the town of Norlina that is available for various activities or projects that will help to reduce some social ills such as child victimization, abject poverty, homelessness, elderly abuse, and help to promote economic development of rural farmers. United Shiloh is prepared to provide land, building materials, and construction funds in order to establish a useful facility in helping to correct some of the social ills faced by today's society. The organization would seek the assistance of member churches, charitable organizations, civic groups, business and government agencies, in an effort to create a model multipurpose community facility.

The overall goal of Shiloh Institute is to develop an organized method of delivering relevant services and programs to assist the poor in rural communities escape dependence and improve the quality of their physical and spiritual lives.

Shiloh Institute could be a major asset to government officials, community leaders and the young and old of the communities in helping to address such problems as:

  • Family Disintegration: Single-female headed families; many of the babies having babies are products of the churches of our association. Many of the men responsible for babies are from our churches. We need to find ways of addressing the many-family problems existing among our people.
  • Young Males: We must find ways to reverse the alarming statistics surrounding the young black males of our communities, whether they be school dropouts, on drugs, in jail or dead. We must fmd ways of helping our young men achieve success.
  • The Elderly: Programs should be made available that would allow our senior citizens to remain independent as long as possible by providing Adult Day Care, Foster Care and recreational activities. Assistance could be provided with low cost transportation and volunteer services to and from health facilities.
  • Housing: Shiloh Institute should develop ways to help create low cost affordable housing with special emphasis on larger families.
  • Education: The religious community should be a strong voice encouraging the young to stay in school to get the best possible education, and encourage adult learners to improve their future through continuing education.
  • Health: Shiloh Institute will encourage implementing health education and practices among the very young and the very old; from birth through death.

United Shiloh's Board of Directors have established it's short term objectives (one to three years) to be:

  1. Construct a rural Multipurpose Center to be known as Shiloh Institute
  2. Obtain Nonprofit, tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.
  3. Apply for construction assistance and operational funds from various charitable and business organizations.

Secure funding for implementing the following projects within two (2) years:

Project Elder Care: Apply to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support a Senior Center at Shiloh Institute that would provide daily meals, promote volunteerism and day activities for the area growing elder population.

Youth Alternatives Project: Develop activities within Shiloh Institute that promotes cultural activities on a regular basis and direct teens toward positive cultural development. Employ students to lead focus groups and develop a video library that provides alternatives to less wholesome activities.

Rural Day Care: Increase the availability of Rural Day Care that provides greater opportunities to the working poor. This activity should be self supporting following start-up.

Rural Economic Development: Assist rural and minority farmers determine the feasibility of supporting and investing in Agricultural Exports. Assist in restarting many of the idle chicken and hog operations within the United Shiloh area.

United Shiloh Missionary Baptist Association will work closely with all existing service providers in order to bring about positive change in the lives of the people of rural communities. We seek to be all that we can be through cooperation and collaboration with all who wish to see prosperity in eastern North Carolina.
